Drug World Organizations Drug Cartels - 1436 Words

â€Å"The drug world organization is fundamentally gendered† (Anderson 2005). Anderson has continuously insisted that the illicit drug world, based on a patriarchally organized hierarchy where men continue to dominate, is also one that cannot exist without womens empowerment and agency. It is then critical to concentrate on the complex interplay between men and women. There are numerous ways in which women on the border between the United States and Mexico become involved in crime and the illicit drug economy. These roles are complex and contradictory. While drug smuggling and other forms of female involvement in crime on the U.S.-Mexico border often lead to victimization, neglect, and abuse, manipulation of these roles can serve as a vehicle for female empowerment and liberation from male control. Large organizations called cartels reign over the illegal drug economy in Mexico which are in constant violent competition against U.S. law enforcement officials and members of the Mexican government. According to Campbell (2008), there are four main cartels including the Chapo Guzmà ¡n Cartel, the Tijuana Cartel, the Gulf Cartel, and the Juà ¡rez Cartel. Attempts to control the multi-billion dollar drug trafficking trade leads to dangerous and often fatal circumstances that have evolved from the â€Å"informal, unregulated, underworld nature of smuggling† (Nordstrom 2007) created by pressures from the Mexican government and the United States’ â€Å"War on Drugs†.
